Taxes Never Go Back Down
Polk County is flat broke. With $340M in debt and a negative $44M budget year. Now they want to spend $132M more.
Building for the Future
We do need to build for the future but this is no time to shell out big money.
Our former fed chief and the current chief both say this recession is here to stay.
How can these wealthy lawyers suggest we should spend money when most of us are tightening our belts watching news coverage of foreclosures? Lets implement night court to conserve resources, and after the recession, we will have the money without higher taxes.
 
Hidden from the ballot here are 70 NEW employees in their proposals ($4M/year).  A courthouse nearly as large as Las Vegas, NV.  Vegas has 20X the crime and 5X the population and millions more tourists.  High gas and materials prices will send them way over their current projected budget.
 
A 434,000 sq. ft. Sky Scraper
At a proposed 8 ½  stories and a total of 434,000 sq. ft., the proposed expansion is far too excessive.
The current courthouse is 84,000 sq. ft., this project would be a 5X Increase!
Polk on Another Spending Spree
$205M+ for the events center $70M for a jail with no guards, $57M+ for the Prairie Meadows upgrades and talks of a $60M hotel.    Now we are in a recession and they want to add another $212M+ (with interest) for an unreasonable courthouse design.

A Jailhouse with NO Guards

Remember the jail house bond project went $12M+ over budget and it was a $62M project.  Just imagine how far over budget their $132M project will go.  Their courthouse "proposal" does not include the new employees needed to run the new building.
We fell for this on the jail vote and now we are paying $1M extra each year for the guards that were left out.  Please be smart and don't let this slip by again.
