If it isn’t the Casino, it’s the Events Center, if it’s not the Events Center it’s CIETC, if it’s not CIETC it’s the new jail. Whatever significant project Polk County Supervisors touch, it turns into a massive financial drain for local taxpayers. We beat back Project Destiny and now here they come with another wasteful proposal.

Now the Supervisors and some of their lawyer friends want to build an 8 ½ story `courtrooms’ addition to and remodel our courthouse for $132,000,000+. The Supervisors have scheduled an April 29 vote in an attempt to secure voter approval.

Our preliminary studies show their proposed building could be 2 to 5 times the actual space needed. We compared Polk County’s proposal to other metro county courthouses which have a higher crime rates and determined they are proposing way too much.

Here are some valid reasons we are organizing to oppose this proposal.

• They’ve spent $57M on casino upgrades and $205M on the Events Center $70M on the jail with no guards,  now they want to tack on another $212M (with interest) of new debt. Why not pay down this existing debt and  wait until some bonds get paid off then upgrade the court infrastructure.

• We’ll get the final numbers from the county but when we do, we won’t be surprised if we find with interest, this will cost unsuspecting tax payers around $212,000,000+.

The national credit rating agency which gave Polk County a good credit rating last fall is rapidly losing credibility in the unfolding global credit crisis. Taxpayers across the nation are finding their local governments are in far more serious financial trouble than such credit rating agencies let on. How can we trust their assessment of our debt load capacity, when our taxes are so high already?

• Commercial real estate is piling up and is forecast to get worse. The County’s scare tactic on their lease cost for rental property is just that, a scare tactic.

• We have already verified and reported one campaign ethics violation from their campaign effort to levy this new bond.

There are many more good reasons. We need to get the word out to the voters of Polk County, but as you know that takes money. I am getting some help this time with a "bond-killer" consultant who has an impressive record: 47 bonds defeated, only 7 passed.

Can you help us? $50, $100, $500 and $1000 donations are needed. Don’t misunderstand even a $25 is greatly appreciated, but we are not going to get where we need to be if they are mostly $25 donations. The County Bar Association has already given our opponents a huge $25,000 donation; and we need it quickly.

We have unpaid bills please help us and donate today.

Thanks for considering helping out with this worthy vote.
